Moderation

How does moderation work for a multi-day conference?

A multi-day conference needs one continuous host, because across two or three days the common thread is the scarcest resource. Jasmin Wölke moderates multi-day conferences in German and English, with a separate dramaturgy for each day.

Why one host for all days

At a one-day conference, the agenda carries the programme almost on its own. Across several days that is not enough. Participants come and go, levels of knowledge drift apart, and on the second morning hardly anyone remembers the key statement from the day before. A host who leads all days solves exactly that. She opens day two with a real recap instead of repeated slides, picks up statements from day one and connects sessions that are hours apart. If the host changes every day, the conference loses its memory.

Every day needs its own dramaturgy

The most common mistake in multi-day formats: day two is a copy of day one, just with a more tired audience. Jasmin plans the days differently. Day one sets the theme and builds energy. Day two belongs to depth, with more interaction and shorter blocks, because attention works differently by then. The final day leads to results and a closing that bundles what was learned, before the first guests have to catch their trains. In between there is often an evening programme that needs its own tone: more relaxed than the day, but with shape.

An example from practice

At the International Business Summit, a corporate reference with more than 400 participants, Jasmin hosted two conference days with 15 sessions bilingually. The difference to a one-day format was the preparation: one briefing per day instead of one for everything, a cutting order for every block, and fixed points where she picked up threads from day one. In German and English, so both language groups could follow at every point.

What you can do now

First define what should be achieved by the end of the last day, then plan backwards from there. Book the host for all days including the evening format; that is cheaper and better than three separate solutions. And schedule a short briefing per day. How a single conference day stays on track is shown on keeping the schedule; the format overview is on the hub conference moderation.

Frequently asked questions

Does a three-day host cost three times a single day?
No, usually not. Preparation and travel only occur once. After the briefing you receive a written offer with a fixed price for all days.
Does the host also cover the evening programme between the days?
Yes. Dinner, award ceremony or networking evening can be combined with the day programme, with its own, more relaxed tone.
How does the energy stay up on days two and three?
Through shorter blocks, more interaction and an opening that connects to the previous day instead of starting from zero. Fatigue is a dramaturgy problem, not an audience problem.
Is one briefing enough for all days?
One shared briefing for goal and tone, yes, plus a short check-in per day. Programmes shift, and the host has to know the current state.
Can a multi-day conference run bilingually?
Yes. German and English alternating or with summaries, consistent across all days, so that no language group loses the thread.
