In Graz, English already lives in the project

English does not arrive in Graz with the guests; it is built into the work itself. The city's technology companies develop for customers and project partners around the world, international teams do research at TU Graz and the Medical University, and in many development departments English has long been the working language. In the hall it looks like this: the doctoral researcher from the joint project and the project engineer of the international customer understand no German, while the colleagues from production and administration are at home in German. An event that serves only one of these groups loses the other one, usually silently and well before the break.

A language plan instead of saying everything twice

In the briefing, Jasmin fixes which programme item runs in which language and places summaries exactly where the other group needs to pick up the thread. On stage she switches without a seam and without speaking every sentence twice. She phrases questions so that each person can answer in their own language. How much load this routine carries is shown by the Bosch Global Sales Summit, a corporate reference with 500 participants from 40 countries: a programme she led largely in English, while the German speaking part of the hall still took every item home.

Typical occasions between test bench and world market

The customer day of a measuring technology company with partners from several continents, the kickoff of a development project with distributed teams, the town hall of a company whose sites work across three time zones, the symposium with international research partners. German companies that place their Austria date in Graz also regularly bring English speaking guests. When a fully English programme is the better choice is explained in the article moderation in English, the mechanics of switching in the article bilingual moderation. All Graz engagements are collected on the Graz city page.

Frequently asked questions

How is it decided which language runs when?
In the briefing, based on the hall: who is sitting there, which contributions are fixed, where does the other group need a summary? From this a firm language plan emerges.
Does she interpret talks live?
No, she is not an interpreter. She condenses the key messages in the other language so the hall can follow the discussion and join in.
How does she prepare English technical vocabulary?
Through the briefing: project names, product terms and the company's abbreviations are agreed in advance, so the stage speaks the language of the house.
Does the second language cost extra?
No. The fee depends on scope, duration and preparation of the event, not on the number of languages spoken.
Does the switching also work in discussions?
Yes. Jasmin asks in the language of the person answering and summarises for the other group without slowing the conversation down.
Is she on site in time for a morning slot in Graz?
Yes. She travels the day before via Munich and Salzburg, with the technical check or rehearsal in the evening.
