Jasmin Wölke moderates events in Linz in English, in German or in a planned alternation. After more than ten years of international corporate work, the conference moderator leads mixed audiences so that both language groups stay with the programme to the end.
Where the English in Linz comes from
In Linz, English flows in from two directions. The city's software scene, which includes Dynatrace, founded here, develops for customers around the globe and has long worked in English in many teams. And the industry commissions its plants wherever its customers are: whoever delivers metallurgical or firefighting technology worldwide has project partners who speak no German. Add the research at Johannes Kepler University and a media art scene that, as a UNESCO City of Media Arts, draws international visitors. At a customer day, a townhall or a symposium, both worlds then sit in the same hall: colleagues from production and administration at home in German, the developer and the partner from abroad in English.
The language plan is built in the briefing
Saying everything twice makes any programme drag. Jasmin therefore defines in advance which item runs in which language and where the other group needs a summary to keep the thread. On stage she switches without a seam, phrases questions so that every person can answer in their own language, and condenses instead of translating. How robust this routine is shows in the Bosch Global Sales Summit, a corporate reference with more than 500 participants from 40 countries, whose programme she carried largely in English without losing the German-speaking part of the room.
Occasions between the Danube and the world market
The customer day of a plant engineering company with guests from several time zones, the kickoff of a distributed development project, the townhall of a software company with sites in three countries, a research symposium at the JKU. German companies that place their Austria date in the Design Center or the Tabakfabrik also tend to bring international guests. How the switching works in practice is explained in the article how bilingual moderation works. The profile is shown by the hub bilingual moderation, and all Linz engagements by the Linz city page.
