Jasmin Wölke moderates events in Freiburg in German and English, in a guided switch or entirely in English. In the border triangle, international researchers sit next to German departments, and both should be able to follow the same programme.
Why Freiburg needs bilingual stages
Freiburg sits in the triangle of three countries: Basel is about 70 kilometres away, and Alsace begins just outside the city. The Albert Ludwig University and the university hospital attract researchers from all over the world. The Fraunhofer institutes ISE and IPM work in international projects, and pharmaceutical production and semiconductor manufacturing belong to global groups. In many Freiburg event rooms, English is not an exception but the working language. The paper is published in English, the project meeting runs in English. Yet the event around it is often still planned entirely in German, and that loses exactly the guests it was meant for.
Language direction: planned in the briefing, flexible in the room
Before the event, Jasmin defines which part of the programme runs in which language. Welcome and framing are bilingual, talks run in the speaker's language, and she mirrors the key messages briefly in the other language. She does not translate sentence by sentence: that costs time and is rarely needed when the room at least understands both languages. On site she listens to the audience and adjusts the balance. Her English comes from more than ten years of corporate work at Bosch, SAP and Volkswagen. At the Bosch Global Sales Summit, a corporate reference with over 500 participants from 40 countries, she hosted three days fully bilingually.
From the Konzerthaus to your own premises
The guided switch works in every format the city offers: a conference at the Konzerthaus, a reception at the Historisches Kaufhaus, a town hall on your own premises or a stage programme in the Sick-Arena at Messe Freiburg. What matters is that the language question comes up early, not only when the running order is written. Then speakers can be prepared, slides unified, and the Q&A planned so that questions are welcome in both languages. The article on bilingual moderation explains how the switch works in principle.
